            The South River Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ladies Auxiliary Flea Market is planned for 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 22 at the post home, 31 Reid St. The event will feature the flea market, a 50/50, a bake sale and refreshments.

            Vendors are sought for the St. Lawrence Church Giant Flea Market set for 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 6 at the church, 109 Laurence Parkway, Laurence Harbor section of Old Bridge. Spaces and tables cost $20 each and are available inside the parish hall and outside in the church parking lot. The parish kitchen will be open during the event.

      SRHS class of 1957 to gather for reunion
            South River High School (SRHS) class of 1957 will celebrate its 50th reunion with several events set for Sept. 28 and 29. There will be a wine-and-cheese party from 7-11 p.m. on Sept. 28 at the home of Carol Dohn May. Classmates will attend the homecoming football game (SRHS vs. Spotswood High School) at 1 p.m. at Denny Stadium on Sept. 29. A 7 p.m.

      Sponsorships available for OLOL Fall Festival
            Our Lady of Lourdes (OLOL) School, 44 Cleveland Ave., Milltown, will hold its second annual Fall Festival from 5-11 p.m. on Sept. 28, noon to 10 p.m. on Sept. 29, and 1-6 p.m. on Sept. 30 outdoors on the school grounds. The event will feature food, music and more. All proceeds will go toward the longterm preservation and maintenance of the school.

      Plays-in-Park to stage 'Rapunzel' Oct. 7-21
            Plays-in-the-Park, Middlesex County's summer theater, will offer performances of its 15th annual indoor children's musical, "Rapunzel," at noon and 3 p.m. on Oct. 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 in the 150-seat black box in the Stephen J. Capestro Amphitheater, Roosevelt Park, Edison. The theater is handicapped accessible.

            The South River Historical and Preservation Society will meet at 7 p.m. on Sept. 26 at the South River Museum, 64-66 Main St. Guest speakers will be Chuck Eckhardt and Bob McAvoy, co-authors of "Our Brothers Gone Before: An Inventory of Graves and Cenotaphs in New Jersey Cemeteries for Union and Confederate Civil War Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Surgeons and Nurses.

      Women educators plan fundraising yard sale
            Alpha Delta Kappa, Kappa chapter, a sorority of women educators from the East Brunswick area, will hold a Giant Yard Sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 29 at 353 Riva Ave., East Brunswick. Rain date is Sept. 30. All proceeds will go to a scholarship for an East Brunswick High School student and to a "campership" to attend Camp Daisy.

            Cub Scout Pack No. 3, Monroe, will hold a recruitment night at 7 p.m. on Sept. 28 in the cafeteria at Woodland School, 42 Harrison Ave. The evening will be an opportunity for youngsters and parents to learn about Cub Scouts. All boys attending will participate in the New Jersey Search and Rescue "Lost in the Woods - Prepare for Search and Rescue" program.

            Helmetta Day will be celebrated from 1-4 p.m. on Sept. 22 on the grounds at Holy Trinity Church, 100 Main St. The event will feature food, a DJ, a giant slide, a "moonwalk," jousting, games, prizes and representatives from the Helmetta police and fire departments and the Middlesex County Sheriff's Department.

            Several upcoming Harvest Happenings events are planned at the Spotswood Public Library, 548 Main St. A Pumpkin-Weight Guessing Contest for children and adults and a Candy Count Contest for youngsters ages 3-14 are on tap for October. Prizes will be awarded in four age categories in the pumpkin contest. There will be one winner in the candy raffle.

            The Sayreville Pet Adoption Center, 1400 Main St., Sayreville, will hold its sixth annual No-Fleas Market and Craft Fair from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 30 in the parking lot adjacent to the shelter. The event will feature more than 25 crafters and vendors, homemade food, refreshments and raffles. Proceeds will benefit the animal shelter.

      Report: Bald eagle sightings up in county
      Mill Pond, Edgeboro Landfill among local spots frequented
            The bald eagle is alive and well in Middlesex County. According to a newly released report from the Edison Wetlands Association (EWA) and the Highland Park Environmental Commission (HPEC), local sightings of the bald eagle have dramatically increased in recent years.
