      Candidates to appear at Monroe GOP meeting
            The monthly meeting of the Monroe Township Republican Club will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 18 at Garvey's Restaurant, Spotswood-Gravel Hill Road, Monroe. Guest speakers will be Monroe Republican mayoral candidate Tom Nothstein and Township Council candidates Karen Scarpa and Carlos Lopez. Refreshments will be served.

            The Spotswood Drug and Alcohol Alliance seventh annual Spotswood Family Day is set for noon to 4 p.m. on Oct. 20 at Spotswood High School, Summerhill Road.       Jan Gross to appear at Monroe Library
            National Book Award finalist Jan T. Gross will be the guest speaker at the next installment in the Fall Author Series set for 1 p.m. on Oct. 23 at the Monroe Township Library, 4 Municipal Plaza. The bloodiest peacetime pogrom in 20th-century Europe took place in the Polish town of Kielce on July 4, 1946, one year after World War II ended.

      Food drive under way in adult communities
            The ninth annual Monroe Fall Harvest Food Drive to benefit Middlesex County Food Organization and Outreach Distribution Services (M.C.F.O.O.D.S.) has begun in eight adult communities in Monroe. The food drive stocks shelves at M.C.F.O.O.D.S., the county distribution center for more than 60 local soup kitchens and food pantries.

      Film to be screened, discussed at library
            "Freedom Writers," an inspirational, fact-based 2007 film starring Hilary Swank and Patrick Dempsey, will be shown at 6 p.m. on Oct. 21 at the East Brunswick Public Library, Jean Walling Civic Center. A panel discussion will follow. The film is rated PG-13 and has a running time of 123 minutes.
