      A winning performance
           ERIC SUCAR staff The Monroe Township High School Marching Band performs for the crowd during the United States Scholastic Band Association competition Sept. 29. This marked the first time that Monroe hosted the event, which raised funds for the Music Parents Association. A week later, the band finished first in the Group V division and was overall champion in the Central Jersey Super Saturday Competition in Jackson. The band will compete on Oct. 21 at The College of New Jersey, Ewing, and Oct. 27 in Sayreville.

      School stresses benefits of reading to children
            EAST BRUNSWICK - Readers are created on the laps of their parents. That was one of the messages last week during Family Reading Night at Irwin Elementary School, Racetrack Road, when schoolteachers told parents of kindergartners and first-graders that their encouragement of reading will help their children become better students.
