What is the function of county government? I read the front-page story, "1M Check Presentation Sparks Heated Dispute" (Sentinel, Nov. 1) several times, and I am mystified as to what the function of county government is.

Are they going to give every school district a million dollars for new syntheticturf fields? Where is this money coming from? We already know the answer to this one: the taxpayers. No wonder property taxes are so high in New Jersey. Is funding school athletic fields a function of county government?

I don't see how they can justify this kind of spending.
