Council cuts public discussion, earlier access to info
On Monday, Jan. 7, the East Brunswick Township Council voted, and no one commented. If the council had voted to cut garbage pickups, people would have been up in arms. If it had cut the number of games allowed on a sports field, council members would have at least made comment.
On Monday the East Brunswick Township Council cut two meetings a month from its schedule, and not a voice was heard in protest. From now on, agenda and action sessions will take place at the same meeting. This has been done through the years for the summer session, June, July andAugust. People are away, everything slows down, turnouts at meetings are slim. So the combined meetings are acceptable.
The right way for a council to do business is to have an agenda meeting for exposition, to explain to the public what the council intends to bring up for a vote at the next meeting and why. Members of the public have a week to be informed about what occurred. They can go to the meeting, watch one of several showings on EBTV, or pick up the Sentinel. If they find something interesting, they can go to the action meeting and make comment on the item and either bring knowledge to the council about the issue or leave withmore information than they had.
I am offended that the council members have taken such action. They have cut public discussion. They have taken away our right to information before a vote, and they did it without public input because they did it at a combined meeting.
