      Day of Prayer set at high school flagpole
            A National Day of Prayer event is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on May 1 at the flagpole in front of Spotswood High School, Summerhill Road. Students, faculty, parents and local officials, including Mayor Barry Zagnit, will join together in prayer for the United States. All are welcome to attend.

      School tab passes easily; three elected to board
            MILLTOWN - Voters approved the school budget in a 2-1 margin during the April 15 election. The $13.1 million tab for 2008-09, which will keep the school tax rate stable, passed by a vote of 402-194.

      Applications available for EBHS preschool
            East Brunswick High School (EBHS) is now accepting applications for its 2008-09 Preschool Education Program to be held at the high school, Cranbury Road. The program is open to East Brunswick residents who will be 3 years old by Oct. 31, 2008, but who are no older than 4 years, 8 months. Participants must be toilet trained and have up-to-date immunizations.

            The Level Club of South River is seeking vendors for its semiannual Yard Sale set for 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 17 in the grove area of theMasonic Temple, 120 Old Bridge Turnpike, Sayreville. Rain date is May 18. Rental cost of a table and a space is $15; space only, $10. Tables and/or spaces will be available on a first-come basis.

            The First Reformed Church of South River, 40 Thomas St., will hold a Spaghetti Dinner from 5-7 p.m. on May 10. The menu will include spaghetti with meatballs and sausage, tossed salad, Italian bread, dessert and beverage. Cost is $8 for adults, $4 for children under age 10.

            The Friends of the Monroe Township Library will hold its annual Book and Media Sale fromApril 26-May 2 at the library, 4 Municipal Plaza. Gently used books and media will be available at bargain prices. The sale will feature thousands of donated items sorted into fiction, hardcover, paperbacks, nonfiction, children's books, movies, music and audiobooks.

            East Brunswick Police Department Youth Services will present a "Straight Talk" program from 6-8 p.m. on May 12 at East Brunswick High School, Cranbury Road. The program will target troubled juveniles, ages 12-17, who are at risk for becoming involved in criminal or delinquent behavior.

            Sayreville Pet Adoption Center, 1400 Main St., will hold its fifth annual Bandit's Spring Bazaar and Flower Sale from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 4 in the shelter parking lot. Vendors will be on site to offer a variety of new merchandise and crafts. There will be homemade food and refreshments, door prizes and a Super Basket Raffle.

      Library events to mark Israel's 60th anniversary
            The East Brunswick Public Library, Jean Walling Civic Center, will host a variety of events from 2-5 p.m. on May 4 to begin its monthlong 60th Anniversary Celebration of the Establishment of the State of Israel. Aphotography exhibit titled "The Land of Israel Is Beautiful! Eretz Yisrael Yafah!" will open at 2 p.m. and run through May 30.

            The East Brunswick Jewish Center will present a Super Bowl XLII Video Chalk Talk with New York Giants quarterback coach Chris Palmer from 7:30-9 p.m. on May 6 a the synagogue, 511 Ryders Lane. Palmer will discuss the Giants' Super Bowl triumph over the New England Patriots and will review the recently completed NFLdraft, from the Giants' perspective.

            A 5K Race and 1-Mile Fun Run to celebrate Spotswood's 100th anniversary are set for April 26 beginning at Spotswood High School, 105 Summerhill Road. The 1-mile event is set for 8:30 a.m. The 5K will start at 9 a.m. Race-day registration will take place from 7-8:15 a.m.
