      Nation must not forget its heroes
            All great civilizations in the past honored their warriors in life and in death. The term "hero" in history tended to be reserved for great leaders and warriors who saved their cultures or nations in times of peril. A key definition of a hero is that of an illustrious warrior.

      Writer might be unaware of name origins
            Perhaps Taj Ahmad ("Take the 'Sex' Out of 'Middlesex County,' " Sentinel, Letters to the Editor, May 8) is unaware of the origins of Middlesex, or for that matter, Sussex and Essex as well.

      Survivor urges passage of Heart for Women Act
            As a survivor of coronary heart disease and an American Heart Association Go Red for Women survivor ambassador, I'm one of the fortunate ones. Heart disease and stroke claim the lives of nearly 14,000 New Jersey women annually. Too many mothers, sisters, daughters and friends die annually from these diseases.

      Volunteer efforts should be recognized
            In our busy lives, nothing is more valuable than time. It follows that volunteers - people who chose to give their time to make this a better community - are very valuable indeed. Fewer than one-third of adults give their time through volunteer work, according to the Corporation for National and Community Service.
