Walk to raise funds for cancer research

My husband, Steven, and I are registered for the Breast Cancer 3 Day. This is a 60- mile, three-day walk raising funds to fight breast cancer. It is a very emotional, uplifting journey benefiting a worthy cause. Beyond the minimum $2,200 each walker must raise is the physical commitment we make. We begin training six months in advance, sacrificing weekends, to work our way up to 20 miles a day.

The 100 percent taxdeductible donations go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure - 85 percent of the net proceeds benefit this leader in the global movement to end breast cancer by funding research and community outreach programs - and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund - 15 percent of the net proceeds benefit support for breast cancer initiatives, including research, treatment and education.

More than 200,000 women will be diagnosed and more than 40,000 will lose their battle with breast cancer this year. My Aunt Lil is a twotime survivor due to the amazing strides each of the two beneficiaries has made in the world of breast cancer treatment.

I will be walking alongside my husband and 2,000 other men and women, some survivors, some currently battling the disease, Oct. 17-19 in Philadelphia.

Donations can be made online at www.the3day.org.
