Resident wants to know why seniors have to pay school taxes

I'm amused by the letters to the editor from people bemoaning the fact that the last budget was voted down by a small margin in East Brunswick.

The nerve of the Township Council, cutting $1 million from the rejected budget. This amounted to less than 1 percent.

Everyone knows that budgets are padded with wish-list items. This is why they are "proposed" budgets.

Well, welcome to the America of less. Many senior citizens on fixed incomes struggle to pay their property taxes. They must budget their limited resources to pay their taxes. Why? School taxesmake up 70 percent of East Brunswick's municipal taxes.

Why do seniors have to pay school taxes at all? I think it is fair that seniors pay for their share of municipal services, but not the school portion. Just think … a $10,000 tax bill would be reduced to $3,000. Hey, there is money for food - no more Alpo.

I propose that we senior citizens form a voting block. We don't vote for any incumbent until our grievances are addressed.

To those who want unlimited school funding, I suggest that donations can be made to the local school board. The money should come out of your pocket, not mine. Anyone care to join me in this fight?
