      Local swimmers qualify for U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials
            Recent East Brunswick High School graduates Ashley and Kristin Steenvorden are competing at this week's U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in Omaha, Neb. Ashley will compete in the 800-meter freestyle event while her sister will participate in the 400-meter individual medley. Read next week's paper to get the latest on how our area's finest fared.

      South River Junior Legion squad looking for improvement
            The South River High School Junior American Legion baseball team has played better than its 3-5 record would otherwise indicate this spring, according to co-coach Wally Rondesko. Playing for South River American Legion Post 214, Rondesko's club has scored victories over Metuchen, Milltown and John F. Kennedy.

      Sayreville Junior Legion team off to a slow start
            With several young players in the lineup, Sayreville High School baseball coach Mike Novak is looking at the Junior American Legion season as a way for his players to make the adjustment to playing at a higher level. Sayreville's Junior Legion entry is 2-8, but Novak noted that there have been a slew of positives.

            The Sayrewoods South Rebels of Old Bridge have joined the New Jersey Suburban Youth Football League (NJSYFL). The club will be having programs available for pre-K through eighth grade, including flag football, tackle football and cheerleading.
