Congratulations to the U-14 Old Bridge Jaguars, who completed the spring MOSA season with a perfect 10-0 record. The Jaguars capped off their amazing season with a 5-0 win against the Howell United PAL Storm on a blistering hot Sunday afternoon. The only thing hotter than the weather has been the play of the Jaguars. They finished the season having scored a total of 33 goals and gave up only 3 goals. They started the season with a string of six shutouts and added two more over the final two games. The Jaguars defense was led by their goalie, Chris Foley, sweeper Ron Ginsberg, stopper Alex Sastoque, and defenders Zach Einwechter, Alex Knoeller, Maynor Moreno and Chris Smith. Coming up huge, assisting both the defense and offense, was the solid play of the midfielders: Myles McHugh, Tim Crane, Alex Fowler and Devin Terwilliger. Their forwards, Matt McAnally, Michael McCarthy and Frank West, also helped the team score 33 goals. A special thanks goes out to John Sheridan, who trained the team this season and got them to focus and play as a unit. Many thanks to the coaching staff of Jim Foley, John McHugh, Ron Ginsberg and to all the parents for their dedication and encouragement.

After going 41-4 in 2007 as 8-year-olds, winning seven tournaments and winning the Cal Ripken State Championship, the Monroe Dirty Birds, now 9 years old, have started the 2008 season exactly where they left off by going 20-1 from April through the month of June.
After winning the regular season for the Central Jersey Baseball League, the Monroe youngsters lost to a very tough club team from Staten Island, N.Y., in the semifinals. However the boys bounced right back, going 5-0 and winning the Marlboro Memorial Day Tournament, beating Middletown 13-3, Fair Haven 12- 2, Fairless Hills 11-1, Jackson 3-2, and Marlboro in the championship game by a score of 14-4. Next up for the Monroe 9 Dirty Birds was the South Plainfield Father's Day Tournament, where Monroe again went 5-0, beating Livingston 3-1, the Hackensack Comets 13-6, South Brunswick 7-3, South Plainfield 12-2, and Hazlet in the championship game, 14-1. This is the third consecutive year that this Monroe team has won this tournament.
The season continues with the boys defending their Cal Ripken District 9 title this week with the hope of moving on to defend their state championship title. So far so good, since the boys won their first two games, beating Edison 14-1 and North Edison 17-1.
The Monroe Falcons Junior Legion baseball team battled through a tough week, ending up 1-2 on the week.
Monroe fell to Old Bridge 7-4 and East Brunswick 9-2 with a forfeit win over Milltown sandwiched in between.
In the Old Bridge game, Monroe fell behind 2-0 in the first but scored a run of their own in the second on a Sal Filiano double followed by an RBI single by Jimmy Small.
Old Bridge combined two hits, an error, a few walks and two wild pitches to score five runs in the third and open up a 7-1 lead. Monroe rallied in the fourth inning to score three runs and tighten the game to 7-4. Keith Sanchez doubled and scored on Filiano's RBI single. Ted Moke singled, and two more runs scored on singles by Small and Chris Viani. Monroe left runners in scoring position in two of the last three innings. Sanchez and Filiano had two hits apiece, while Eric Pitti, Chris Pritzlaff, Moke, Small and Viani each added singles. Kevin Conklin (2 1/3 innings, no runs, one hit, four strikeouts) and Casey Rickard (one inning, no hits and no runs, one strikeout) were both sharp in relief. Nick Paskell suffered his first loss of the season, allowing five runs, only three earned, three hits, three walks and two strikeouts.
In the East Brunswick game, Monroe trailed the whole way. In the second,' Monroe made it a 2-1 game as Conklin walked, moved to third on Small's single and scored on a double steal. East Brunswick added two more runs in the fourth to extend it to a 4-1 lead. Monroe scored another run in their half of the inning on Small's RBI groundout to first. East Brunswick added to the lead over the next three innings to seal the 9-2 win. Monroe managed only five hits and left five runners in scoring position. Pritzlaff finished the game with a double and a single, while Small, Filiano and Pitti each added singles. Monroe is now 7-3 and continue its league play this week with games against Colonia, Father & Son, and Piscataway.
