      Thanks for steps toward healthcare reform
            With the passage of S1557, the New Jersey Legislature took a big first step towards healthcare reform in New Jersey. S1557 mandates that New Jersey's children have health insurance, and sets forth market reforms that will bring younger people into the individual insurance market.

      Limiting of rights is offensive to all
            Last week the Supreme Court declared the Washington, D.C., gun ban unconstitutional and in the process made it clear that the rights identified in the second amendment were rights of the individual, just like the rights identified in the First Amendment. We hear a lot about our First Amendment rights.

      Would anti-budget seniors have once supported school tab?
            I always place more weight in the opinions of people who hold opinions that are the opposite that you would normally expect from those people. For example, I place more weight in the opinions of Sheldon Rossman, Warren E. Cohen and Richard McCabe, who have expressed support of the school budget even though they do not have children in the school system.

      Resident thankful to Milltown's police, sanitation depts.
            So often we as citizens can find a lot of things wrong with our government provided services. As a resident of Milltown, I wanted to take a moment to thank two departments in our town that provide outstanding services. First is the Milltown Police Department. On a few occasions I had to call with non-emergency matters, and they responded quickly, graciously and politely.

      Increases not what taxpayers sought at polls
            Are these the changes that the taxpayers of South River were looking for in the last November election: Large increases in water, electric and tax rates. And no help in sight. Now the taxpayers are told that outside consultants recommend that we spend $23 million to revamp government buildings. Were they not revamped just a few years ago?
