Catherine Whetstone was one of 21 student-athletes recognized by the Big East Conference as winners of the 2007-08 Scholar Athlete Sport Excellence Award, which recognizes academic and athletic achievement as well as community service.
The Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence awards are given to one studentathlete in each Big East sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. Student-athletes who attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible. The winners are chosen by the Big East faculty athletic representatives.
Whetstone red-shirted the 2007-08 season after a promising freshman campaign in which she qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 100 butterfly. She placed 14th and set a school record with a time of 53.27, making her an NCAA Honorable Mention All-American. Additionally, her time qualified her for the 2008 Olympic Trials.
Rutgers University head women's gymnastics coach Chrystal Chollet-Norton announced the hiring of Louis Levine as an assistant coach.
"We are delighted to have Lou join our staff for the upcoming school year," said Chollet-Norton. "He was an outstanding gymnast who will bring tremendous knowledge and coaching experience to our program. We look forward to working with him both in the gym and with our recruiting."
Levine brings a wealth of experience to the Rutgers program after spending the previous three years as the assistant director of the International Gymnastics Camp in Stroudsburg, Pa.
Levine's coaching experience includes three seasons as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at his alma matter at the University of Michigan. While a member of the Wolverines staff, he coached 2003 NCAA Vault Champion Andrew DiGiore. Levine also oversaw all aspects of Michigan's recruiting operations and organized the program's operating budget. During his time at Michigan, he served on the planning committee for the program's freshman student-athlete orientation program, helping mentor newcomers.
While an athlete at Michigan, Levine helped the Wolverines to a pair of Big 10 titles in 1999 and 2000 and the 1999 NCAA Championship. He was a two-time recipient of the Coaches Appreciation Award at the program's annual awards banquet.
Levine replaces Thomas DeMattia, who served the past two seasons on the Scarlet Knights' staff.
