      South River football must replace 17 grads from '07 team
      Defending division champs open against Highland Park
            The South River High School football program finds itself in a very unfamiliar position heading into the 2008 season. Winners of four state championships in 11 years, a state playoff team in each of the last 10 seasons, and coming off back-to-back GMC Blue Division titles, the Rams will sport quite a different look this fall.

      Art Official joins greats as Cane Pace winner
            Art Official joined the greatest standardbreds in the sports history when he won the $392,850 Cane Pace at Freehold Raceway on Labor Day. His driver, Millstone's Ron Pierce, has put his name alongside the greatest drivers in the sport's history.

      Golden Grand Prix concludes
            The Jersey Shore Golden Grand Prix series of road races came to a close on Labor Day with the Pier Village 5K in Long Branch. Dersce Deriboba of Ethiopia outdueled fellow countrymen Genna Tuffa to win by two seconds with a time of 14:45.5 on a relatively cool day.

            The Sayreville War Memorial High School football team enters the 2008 season with some solid talent at the skill positions, but a relatively untested group of linemen. Coach George Najjar's Bombers face their first test when they open the season at home Friday against East Brunswick at 7 p.m.

      Spotswood football wants to pick up where it left off
      Chargers won final two games in '07; team opens with Dunellen
            Maybe there is some truth to the ol' sports axiom that a team is only as good as its last game. Or, in the case of the 2007 Spotswood High School football team, its last two games. The Chargers lost their first eight games a year ago, but then won their final two contests against Kearny and Point Beach to finish 2-8.
