Rutgers junior linebacker Ryan D'Imperio and sophomore punter/kicker Teddy Dellaganna each earned Big East Conference weekly football honors, the league announced Monday. D'Imperio was named the Big East Defensive Player of the Week while Dellaganna was honored as the Big East Special Teams Player of the Week.
Rutgers defeated Connecticut, 12-10, Saturday afternoon before a sellout crowd of 42,491 at Rutgers Stadium.
D'Imperio, who is in his first season as the starting middle linebacker for the Scarlet Knights, totaled a game-high 11 tackles in Saturday's game against the Huskies. He also tied his career-high with 1.5 tackles for loss and assisted on a big stop of UConn running back Donald Brown for a one-yard loss to put the Huskies on their own oneyard line in the third quarter. He led a strong defensive effort for the Scarlet Knights, who held Brown - the nation's leading rusher - to 70.8 yards below his rushing average.
Dellaganna played a huge role in the outcome of Saturday's game against Connecticut. He averaged 41.7 yards on seven punts with four of his kicks pinning the Huskies inside their own 20-yard line. Connecticut's best field position in the second half was its own 24-yard line. The Huskies had five drives that started inside the 15- yard line in the second half. Dellaganna's second-half kickoff was fielded at the oneyard line where the return man was tackled. After a defensive stand, the Scarlet Knights got the ball on the UConn 37-yard line where they scored the first touchdown of the contest. Later, Dellaganna's punt pinned the Huskies on their own two-yard line and the first play of the drive resulted in a safety.
