The Milltown 10U/fifth-grade boys travel basketball team won the Central Jersey Basketball League Red Division championship on March 19. Milltown won the championship game against Marlboro by a score of 34-29.
Teams from Middlesex, Somerset and Monmouth counties compete in the Central Jersey Basketball League, a competitive travel league with divisions covering fourth through eighth grade.
The Milltown 10U boys team had a rough road ahead at the beginning of the season. They're from a small town with a small pool of boys, in a league that is town specific and that minimizes the pool for small-town teams. Yet these boys never let that get in their way. They practiced hard, focusing on teamwork, skill development and strategy, and the results were a nine-win, four-loss season. Every player on the team worked hard toward a common goal. They showed tremendous improvement throughout the season.
Among the competition in the league were teams from Colts Neck, Perth Amboy, Wall and Matawan. All these teams offered challenging games. Milltown worked their way through the playoffs and approached a very talented group of players in the finals competition against Marlboro. It was a very exciting game with the crowd of parents, family and friends on their feet cheering and screaming. Milltown was losing 12-6 at the half, but were well coordinated, even-keeled and accurate in the second half, pulling off the victory for their first championship.
The team included Brad Bacchetti, Matthew Ciaccio, Eric Dadika, Nicholas Mohr, Daniel Newton, Edward Parrilla, Raymond Reichardt, Kyle Strelecki, Michael Tarrant, Jacob Torrisi and Louie Vacca.
The coaching staff was Rick Dadika, Ray Strelecki and Rob Torrisi.
