Community volunteers should be praised Iam responding to Dominick Turitto's letter to the editor ("Same Old, Same Old on Spotswood Board of Education," Sentinel, April 2). You are certainly entitled to your opinion; however, I do not understand your implication. The members of the Spotswood Board of Education are routinely members of the Spotswood Soccer Club (or the like)? The only correlation I see is that they are the same people who devote their time to our children and our community. So your implication seems to be a little ridiculous. Organizations in this small town are always in need of committed volunteers who are willing to devote their spare time. Unfortunately, far too often, it is the same residents you see who are dedicated to making a difference. Jerry Hook was recently appointed as a member of the Spotswood Board of Education. I commend Jerry and any other volunteer for devoting their time to these organizations. However, just because Mr. Hook was appointed by a member of the board does not mean that he is not open to "new thoughts and fresh ideas" to offer to the educational system. Jerry has young children in Spotswood schools and Spotswood programs, and I hope he brings a long time of dedication and perseverance to these committees. Perhaps you should give Mr. Hook the benefit of the doubt. As a member of the Spotswood Soccer Club, the Spotswood Recreation Department and the Spotswood Juvenile Conference Committee, I welcome and respect any resident who is willing to give his or her time to these organizations, because without these residents, the organizations would not be a success.
Mr. Turitto, maybe you should consider praising the volunteers of our community no matter what organizations they are affiliated with instead of finding fault with their connection. |
