The third annual Bocce Invitational Tournament will be held 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 20 at Colonial Park, Mettlers Road, in Somerset. Hundreds of amateur and professional bocce players are expected to compete in the daylong event that features matches in both amateur and professional categories. The New Jersey Bocce Invitational is an Italian-American cultural event designed to allow people of all backgrounds to compete for the benefit of local New Jersey charities. Beneficiaries of the event are Operation Shoebox New Jersey, an organization that collects items and ships care packages to combat troops overseas, and the Boys and Girls Clubs of New Jersey. Special guests include Will Jimeno, retired New York & New Jersey Port Authority police officer and inspirational speaker, one of only two people to survive under the rubble on 9/11. His story was told in the Oliver Stone motion picture "World Trade Center." Giada Valenti, singer and songwriter, also will perform, as well as comedian and "Saturday Night Live" alumnus Joe Piscopo and vocalist Bobby Valli, and Rutgers University football players are expected as repeat guests. The East Brunswick Explosion U-19 girls team will hold an open tryout at 1 p.m. June 27 at Dideriksen Park, field No. 1 (near the snack bar) located inside the Heavenly Farms complex off Cranbury Road in East Brunswick. Directions can be found at www.ebsoccer.com. The tryout is open to all girls born after Aug. 1, 1990. East Brunswick/Spotswood Golden Bear Chargers are looking for head coaches in their Jr. Pee Wee and Mitey Mite Cheer Levels. Assistant coaches in all levels are needed for all levels to provide discipline and guidance. Previous cheer experience is not required. Sideline cheers are supplied, and teams' routines are provided for competition. Practice is Aug. 1 through October. Teams that progress through competitions could vie for a spot to go to Walt Disney World in Florida. The Blue & Grey Baseball Camp will be held July 20-23 at Sayreville War Memorial High School. The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day and will cost $130 for the week. A second family member will cost $80. The Sayreville Bomber baseball staff will be the instructors for the week.
