The Monroe Township 10's Dirty Birds successfully defended their District 9 Cal Ripken Championship last week for the fourth consecutive year with an 8-2 win over South Plainfield. The team now advances to the Northern New Jersey State Championship round in Mount Olive beginning July 9, where the team is the twotime defending state champion.

Monroe won its first game by beating Edison 15-0 and then South Plainfield 13- 3. Monroe won its third game against South Brunswick 4-0, knocking South Brunswick out of the tournament. The team then advanced to the playoffs with a win over host North Edison 12-2.

In the championship game, Monroe finished off a tough South Plainfield team, making the Dirty Birds 11-0 this summer.

Monroe will be hosting the 10U Cal Ripken Middle-Atlantic Regional Championship from July 30 to Aug. 5, with 10 state champions from New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, New York City and New Jersey competing for the opportunity to go to the Cal Ripken World Series in Colorado. Monroe has finished third the past two years.

The St. Bart's Buffalos Pop Warner Football and Cheerleading organization will hold registration July 14 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the St. Bart's church hall and cafe, Ryders Lane, East Brunswick. The registration is for flag and contact football, cheerleading, and buddy cheer and football. The programs are for children ages 5-15, up to 160 pounds. The CNJSB Soccer Club, located in East Brunswick, is looking for U11 Boys to round out a travel team roster.

All boys born Aug. 1, 1998, through July 31, 1999, are welcome to an open tryout from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. July 13 at Lawrence Brook School in East Brunswick. Rain date is July 14.

East Brunswick/Spotswood Golden Bear Chargers are looking for head coaches in their Jr. Pee Wee and Mitey Mite Cheer Levels. Assistant coaches in all levels are needed for all levels to provide discipline and guidance. Previous cheer experience is not required. Sideline cheers are supplied and teams' routines are provided for competition. Practice is August 1 through October. Teams that progress through competitions could vie for a spot to go to Walt Disney World in Florida.
