      Tickets on sale for Harry Potter Night
            A Harry Potter Night will be held Aug. 24 at the Jamesburg Public Library, 229 Gatzmer Ave. The event will begin at 7 p.m. with a visit from magician Gary Filson. Guests are invited to come dressed in costume, if desired. Tickets, which cost $3, are on sale at the library.

      Musical to raise funds for Daisy Association
            The East Brunswick Young Adult Charity Players (EBYACP) will present "Camp Showbiz," an original show featuring songs from existing musicals, at 7 p.m. July 31 and Aug. 1 and 2 p.m. Aug. 2 at the East Brunswick Cultural Arts Center (the new Playhouse 22), 210 Dunhams Corner Road.

      'Despereaux' next up for Movies in the Park
            The children's film "The Tale of Despereaux," rated G, will be shown at 8:45 p.m. Aug. 5 outdoors at the new Community Arts Center, Dunhams Corner Road, East Brunswick, as part of the township's Movies in the Park summer series. Rain location will be indoors on a first-come basis.

      Fishing Derby planned in Monroe
            The Monroe Township Recreation Department will hold its annual Fishing Derby for Monroe residents from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 11 at Molders Fish Farm, John Wall Road, Monroe. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Hooks, bobbers and worms will be provided. Participants must bring their own fishing poles. The free event will include refreshments and prizes.

            Vendor and crafter space is available at the Spotswood Drug and Alcohol Alliance Spotswood Family Day and Car Show set for noon-4 p.m. Oct. 17 at Spotswood High School, Summerhill Road. Rain date is Oct. 18. The car show will be sponsored by the Hollywood Nights Cruisers.

            The Jewish Congregation of Concordia/ Monroe Township, 1600 Perrineville Road, in the Concordia Shopping Plaza, Monroe, will hold an open house 10 a.m.- noon Aug. 2. New and unaffiliated residents are welcome to join the Haimish conservative synagogue. Guests will meet officers, trustees and members. Free High Holiday tickets will be available.

            The Friends of the Jamesburg Public Library will honor the Friend of the Year at a reception set for 2-3 p.m. Aug. 13 at the library, Gatzmer Avenue. This year's honoree is Bob Reid, who set up all the new library computers and who helped to update the current computers.

            Bryan Miller, executive director of Ceasefire NJ, will lead a discussion titled "Gun Violence in America: Must We Accept It?" at the next meeting of the Coalition for Peace Action of Monroe Township planned for 10 a.m. Aug. 19 in the courtroom of the Monroe Township Municipal Building, Perrineville Road.

            The Monroe Township Recreation Department will hold its annual Youth Golf Clinic 9-10 a.m. Aug. 4 at Applegarth Driving Range, 194 Applegarth Road. The clinic is open to Monroe residents in grades 3-12. Admission is free of charge. Advance registration is required.

            The East Brunswick Police Department will hold its annual Department of Public Safety Night 6-9 p.m. Aug. 4 around the municipal pond, behind East Brunswick Police headquarters, Jean Walling Civic Center. The event is designed to generate support for anticrime initiatives and to strengthen the relationship between the police department and the community it serves.

            The Spotswood Office on Aging, 1 Arlington Ave., will host a meeting at noon Aug. 3 to discuss the 2009 Senior Olympics set for Sept. 11-13 in Woodbridge. Senior Olympic chairpersons Frank St. Marie and Pat Trombetta will offer information on the event, including how to register and borough-sponsored registration discounts.

      Brazilian film next up for library festival
            The 2009 Summer International Film Festival at the East Brunswick Public Library, Jean Walling Civic Center, will begin again Aug. 4 with 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. screenings of the Brazilian film "The Year My Parents Went on Vacation." The 2006 movie, rated PG, was directed by Cao Hamburger.

            South River will observe the annual National Night Out with a street fair and party 5-10 p.m. Aug. 4 on the South River High School grounds, Montgomery Street.       Blood drive planned for Aug. 1 at church
            St. Thomas the Apostle Church, in cooperation with Knights of Columbus Council No. 4815, will hold a summer blood drive from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 1 in the parish auditorium, Route 18 south, Old Bridge. Donors must be between the ages of 17 and 75, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in reasonably good health.

            The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Team in Training (TNT) program will hold a complimentary information meeting at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 5 at the East Brunswick Public Library, Jean Walling Civic Center. TNT is a charity sports-training program in which participants raise donations to help find cures for blood cancers.
