      Events in E.B. honor longtime director
            Events are planned this weekend to honor Elliott Taubenslag, who is retiring as director of East Brunswick's Children's Summer Theater program after serving for 50 years. Every summer, Taubenslag has directed the program for kids age 7-12 in the program, which runs four days a week and has received numerous awards.

      Women invited to free self-defense class
            Brill's Karate, 508 Main St., Main Street Marketplace, Spotswood, will host a free women's self-defense clinic 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Aug. 15. Participants will learn basic defensive skills to help them feel more secure and enable them to defend themselves and their family in various situations.

      Golf outing to aid Shane Foundation
            The eighth annual Joshua Harr Shane Golf Classic will be held on Aug. 11 at Mercer Oaks Golf Course, West Windsor. Last year's event brought out more than 150 golfers, 150 sponsors and 50 volunteers who raised more than $30,000 to support the Joshua Harr Shane Foundation, begun by the Shane family to honor the dreams of their son, who passed away in 2000 at the age of 18.

            The Monroe Township Recreation Department will hold its annual Fishing Derby for Monroe residents from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 11 at Molders Fish Farm, John Wall Road, Monroe.
