Surita Gran
      Mrs. Gran, 80, of the Lake Nelson section of Piscataway, died Aug. 30, 2009. Prior to her retirement, she was a special-education teacher in Irvington and Piscataway. Her husband, Howard, died in 2002, and a daughter, Martha Woodruff, died in 2005. Surviving are two daughters, Abby Christensen of Costa Mesa, Calif.

      Mrs. Smigel, 77, of East Brunswick, died Sept. 1, 2009, in Park Place Center, South Brunswick. A schoolteacher, she taught at Churchill Junior High School, East Brunswick, during the 1970s. Her husband, James Smigel, died in 1995, and a sister, Donna Bozymowski, died in 2008.

      Mr. Petersen, 77, of South River, died Sept. 1, 2009, in Saint Peter's University Hospital, New Brunswick. Prior to his retirement in 1994, he was employed as a heavy-equipment operator with the borough of South River Department of Public Works. He also worked, with his brother Robert, for more than 30 years at South River Iron Works.

      Mrs. Ditaranto, 75, of Maryland, formerly of Old Bridge, died Aug. 31, 2009, in Annapolis, Md. Her husband, Angelo Ditaranto, died in 1999. Surviving are three sisters, Judith McPherson of Annapolis, Janice Brown of Gilford, Conn., and Joyce Tenney of Sands Point, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews. A Mass was offered at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Old Bridge.

A daughter, Sheryl Mc- Connell, died in 2005. Surviving are his wife, Carol Foster Komoniesky; two daughters, Lisa Sabo of Spotswood and Jennifer Raia of Old Bridge; and five grandchildren.

      Mr. Oppenheimer, 86, of the Kendall Park section of South Brunswick, died Aug. 30, 2009, following a brief illness. He was an inspector for the State of New Jersey. Prior to that, he was a chicken and egg farmer by trade with the family business in South Brunswick Township. He was predeceased by a sister, Berti Siegel.

      Mr. Caruso, 85, of Toms River, died Sept. 11, 2009, at Concord Healthcare and Rehabilitation, Lakewood. He was a U.S. Army of World War II. Mr. Caruso was a bricklayer for over 30 years. He was predeceased by two brothers, Carmen and Louis Caruso, and two sisters, Antoinette Farella and Mary Zangara.
