Losing candidate should give up call for recount in Monroe

How low will they go? I'm speaking, of course, about the Monroe Township Democrats.

Democratic candidate Stephen M. Dalina lost the Ward 3 Township Council race to Republican Michael Leibowitz. Now Dalina wants a recount of ballots that have already been counted twice. Last summer the Monroe Democrats moved about 100 voters from Ward 2, District 1, to Ward 3, District 9, to enhance his chances of winning. This was done in the Outcalt section of Monroe. This was done without informing anyone except the Middlesex County Democratic in-crowd.

Despite this gerrymandering, however, Dalina lost by 35 votes. Now he wants to challenge the results by stating that not all of the voters who were moved to Ward 3, District 9, had their votes counted. Of course they didn't. About 53 percent of the registered voters in Ward 3, District 9, voted. This approximated the Ward 3 percentage of voters, at 49 percent.

Dalina is unhappy because his "done deal" wasn't done.

Mr. Dalina must feel that he is owed the council seat by reason of his political pedigree — his father, Stephen J. Dalina, is the Middlesex County freeholder director. Mr. Dalina needs to realize that the citizens of Monroe, not the Democratic political bosses, decide who sits on their council. Mr. Dalina needs to admit that he lost, stop this ridiculous recount and get on with his life.
