Three local men charged in robbery at E.B. motel

EAST BRUNSWICK — Three local men were charged in an assault and robbery at a local motel. Those suspects and two others also later received drug charges.

The alleged robbery took place at 11:30 a.m. Feb. 17 at the Studio 6 Motel, Route 18. East Brunswick police were called to the scene about an assault in progress in one of the rooms. Police said their investigation revealed that Lemont Love, 29, of Jamesburg; Randy Williams, 28, of South River; and Charles Opher, 32, of South River, allegedly assaulted a 29-year-old North Brunswick man who was staying at the motel.

Love was an acquaintance of the alleged victim, according to police.

The victim reportedly told police that the suspects pushed him to the ground, then kicked and punched him and stole his cell phone before fleeing from the area in a silver Pontiac Sunfire. The victim indicated that the subjects may have been heading to Spotswood.

Spotswood police were notified and officers there were able to locate the vehicle and the three suspects at a residence on Katz Way.

Love, Williams and Opher were arrested, and East Brunswick police charged them with robbery, aggravated assault and burglary. Bail on those charges was set at $250,000 for each suspect. All three were transported to the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in North Brunswick.

Spotswood police, who said the three men were found to be in possession of suspected heroin and pills, filed drug possession charges against the suspects. Police said Williams was also charged with a weapons offense after being found in possession of a folding knife and metal knuckles.

Spotswood police obtained a warrant to search the Katz Way home and allegedly found additional controlled dangerous substances. As a result, the residents, Raymond Nichols, 57, and Roy Dey III, 37, were charged with possession of cocaine, marijuana, hypodermic syringes and drug paraphernalia, according to Spotswood police. Both were taken to the county correction center pending bail.
