Police: Man hit officer, sped off

EAST BRUNSWICK — Police arrested a township man after he allegedly struck a police officer with his car and left the scene last week.

East Brunswick Police Officer Jason Haykel was outside his police car, backing up another officer on a motor vehicle stop, when he was struck by a passing car at 11:50 p.m. March 9, according to police. The driver-side mirror of a passing 1991 Ford sedan struck Haykel’s back, police said, adding that the force of the impact was enough to break off the mirror.

The vehicle allegedly sped off and turned onto Park Place, a dead-end street. The driver then attempted to turn his vehicle around on Park Place and leave the area but was stopped by Patrolman Kimberly Rufalo, according to police.

The driver, Garry Fraser, 35, allegedly resisted arrest after being ordered from the vehicle and had to be physically subdued and handcuffed by additional officers who arrived on the scene, police said.

Fraser was transported to East Brunswick police headquarters, where he was processed and charged with criminal complaints of assault by auto and obstructing and resisting arrest. He was also cited for reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, failure to report an accident and improper lane change. Fraser was then taken to the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in North Brunswick in lieu of $2,500 bail.

The East Brunswick Rescue Squad transported Haykel to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick, where he was treated and released later the same evening.
