Farm Fair scheduled for April 10 at library

The Monroe Township Public Library, 4 Municipal Plaza, will hold a Farm Fair 11 a.m.- 4 p.m. April 10. The event will feature lectures, demonstrations and more. All family members are invited to attend. With the exception of the plant exchange, all events are ticketed. Free tickets are available at the library welcome desk.

A variety of events are scheduled throughout the day.

Plant Exchange, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. — Participants may bring in a healthy houseplant, seedling, annual, etc., to exchange with another guest. Plants should be labeled.

Urban Farming Lecture, 11 a.m. — Rutgers University Professor Joseph Heckman will discuss how to build soil fertility, make compost, select locally adapted crops, design an easyto move chicken pasture pen, plant and animal husbandry, on-farm learning experiences of children and more. He will also offer an illustrated tour of his new post-and-beam barn, raised with the help of family and friends, and answer questions about his future plans and reasons for keeping a family cow.

“Homesteading” Author Lecture and Book Signing, 1 p.m. — “Homesteading,” the companion volume to its bestselling first volume, “Back to Basics,” is a how-to guide encompassing a wide range of topics including home gardening, pantry and food storage, keeping animals in one’s backyard, building structures such as doghouses and weathervanes, and the basics of alternative energy, crafting and well-being. Editor Abigail Gehring will be on hand to present information about different food-preservation methods such as canning, freezing and drying.
