Consignors needed for fair April 29–May 1
Heuer, who was pregnant with her second child, became good friends with Chinchar, the mother of one child.
They conversed with other experienced mothers and mothers-to-be about all things children, and shared ideas, tips and belongings.
The concept of sharing belongings has prompted the two to establish Jersey Kids Consignment with a consignment fair scheduledApril 29-May 1.
“In these times you may be giving a child something [a parent] couldn’t afford to give,” Chinchar said. “Everybody needs help sometimes.”
Consignors, which can be an individual or an organization such as a church or daycare center, can sign up now through April 21. Anyone who has new or gently used, clean, intact, stain-free items for newborns through size 12 can sign up on www.jerseykidsconsignment. com in order to sell the items for about one-third to one-fourth of the original price. Consignors, depending on percentage credits theywill receive for volunteering during the fair or for bringing in other referrals, can make anywhere from 60 to 100 percent in profits.
Consignors just need to register, write a brief description of their items, print out and then affix the tags to the items. Anyone who does not have time to tag their own items should contact Heuer or Chinchar through the website for assistance.
Suggested items include strollers, high chairs, bassinets, breast pumps, bouncers, pack-and-plays, co-sleepers, carriers, bedding, dance outfits, sporting goods, karate uniforms, seasonal clothing, toys, books, DVDs, puzzles, and electronic toys including necessary batteries.
Car seats, bicycle helmets, toy guns, stuffed animals and formula will not be accepted. All items should be less than five years old. However, any coupons for items such as formula are welcome.
“When we raise children, we don’t realize how much they come with,” Chinchar laughed.
However, the two women noted the importance of this fair not being considered a garage sale, but more like a department store. Heuer said that sometimes new mothers get so excited that they open all of their baby’s gifts and never use some of them, noting that this is an opportunity to give high-quality items to people who can make use of them.
“We want them to feel like they just bought it at the store,” Heuer said. “We want them to feel even though they are getting something inexpensive, they’re getting something with quality.”
The organizers will check all of the items to make sure they are up to standard.
They believe in this mission because they have been to consignment fairs themselves.
Chinchar said hand-medowns were a way of life for her growing up, and although she never achieved her dream of opening her own store, she appreciates recycling items instead of throwing them away.
Heuer has bought used items through eBay and has enjoyed sharing items within her moms’ group.
“As a mother, I learned that new isn’t necessarily better,” Heuer said.
The fair will be open to the general public 1-9 p.m. Thursday, April 29; 9 a.m. – noon p.m. and 1 p.m. – 9 p.m. Friday, April 30; and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, May 1, at North Brunswick Volunteer Fire Company No. 3, 1470 Cozzens Lane. The firemen will be selling refreshments.
All items are due April 28 between noon and 9 p.m.; the consignor must sign up on the website.
Consignors and volunteers will be privy to a two-hour presale prior to the opening of the fair to see if there are items they would like to purchase.
On May 1, 2-8 p.m. there will be a halfprice sale, during which consignors can decide if they would like to continue selling their items at full price or give a 50-percent discount.
“A lot of people want to see what they can sell. They don’t really want to take it back to their house,” Heuer said.
The consignors can decide if they would like any unsold items to be donated after the last day of the fair. Any nonprofit organizations interested in picking up those items free of charge should contact Heuer or Chinchar.
“Being moms, we have a soft side for moms in need,” Chinchar said.
Heuer and Chinchar are also looking for volunteers to help out during the fair.
