Classic cars coming back to South River next week
SOUTH RIVER — The borough’s Cruise Night series will reach its eighth year of classic summer fun this year.
Skeeter Spitaleri, coordinator of the events and owner of Spitaleri Furniture, noted that past Cruise Nights have brought anywhere from 500 to 10,000 people into the small borough tucked between East Brunswick and Sayreville.
“[The turnout] all depends on the weather,” he said.
The classic car shows, which over the years have seen upwards of 250 cruisers displayed, will kick off June 17 from 5 to 9 p.m. along Main Street. Cruise Night will return on July 15. The rain date for both nights is Aug. 19.
Main Street is closed to traffic for the event, and organizers ask that anyone who travels to the event on a bicycle, to walk with the bike through the show, not ride it.
“The Cruise Nights started because many people who are not from South River don’t really know the town,” Spitaleri said. “South River is a small town, and the Cruise Nights allow people to come in … it’s a draw to this tight community and to all the businesses.”
Spitaleri said Cruise Night-goers will get to see various hot rods, racecars, antiques, motorcycles, imports, collectibles, muscles cars, and more.
“There is no admission fee, and there will be a lot of food. Also, people can go into the various restaurants in town,” he said. “Trophies will be given out in all different kinds of categories.”
Entertainment will be provided by DJ Jerry “Wolfman” Burst.
“He will play many good oldies,” Spitaleri said.
The Cruise Nights started in the summer of 2002, thanks to local resident Peter Guindi, who is now a borough councilman. He had said he wanted to bring the event to South River because he had seen the success of similar classic car shows in other New Jersey towns.
Guindi, Spitaleri, and Scott Laffin, of the former Laffin Chevrolet Oldsmobile, ran the first event as members of the borough’s Economic Development Commission, though there is no budget for the event.
“We are all volunteers,” said Spitaleri, noting that Cruise Night is run with donations from local businesses.
Spitaleri said anyone with questions about the event can call him at 732-254- 0335.
