New Bruns. farmers market opens for its second season NEW BRUNSWICK — Wider selections of fresh produce, prepared foods and goods. and an all-weather pavilion are among the new features at the New Brunswick Community Farmers Market this year. The market, which opened for its second season June 19 at 178 Jones Ave., off Georges Road, will be open Thursdays from 1 to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Oct. 16. The Rutgers University School of Environmental and Biological Sciences and Rutgers Cooperative Extension operate the market in partnership with Johnson & Johnson, in collaboration with the city of New Brunswick. It was established last year as a way to help increase the consumption of fresh, nutritious fruits and vegetables in the local community. “The farmers market builds upon the longstanding partnership through which Johnson & Johnson, Rutgers and the city of New Brunswick have worked to address the health needs of the local community,” said Sharon D’Agostino, vice president of worldwide corporate contributions and community relations for Johnson & Johnson. “Access to quality and reasonably priced fresh vegetables and fruits is critical in encouraging healthy eating habits. We were delighted with the results from last year and are applying our learning to ensure an even stronger second year. Ours is the only farmers market in the country measuring social outcomes and longterm health impacts on the community.” This season, the market is offering a wider variety of locally grown produce, including peppers and other greens, along with fresh herbs. Vendors are offering authentic Mexican tacos, Caribbean cuisine, sausages and pierogi, along with natural soaps and perfumes, handbags, gourmet teas and other goods, according to market manager Jaymie Santiago. New prepared-food vendors include Reina’s Cakes and Catering and Sally’s Dawg Den. Pop’s Farm Market of Monroe is also returning. In addition, cooking demonstrations offer patrons the opportunity to taste new foods and learn new recipes. Also, Saint Peter’s University Hospital is expected to send its mobile health unit to the market once a month for free health screenings. Also new this summer is an “idea garden” that will teach children and adults simple techniques for growing vegetables in their own backyards. The new 30-by-60-foot open-air pavilion, which is expected to be completed in July, will allow customers to shop comfortably in rain or shine.
