Three injured in shooting outside hotel in Edison
EDISON — Police are investigating a shooting that occurred during the early morning hours of July 11 in the parking lot of the Holiday Inn on Woodbridge Avenue.
According to police, three men received gunshot wounds in the legs around 3:20 a.m. The victims were a 21-year-old from Somerset, a 26-year-old from North Brunswick and a 26-year-old from Elizabeth. All three were transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.
“From my understanding, they were all in stable condition and the injuries were not life-threatening,” said Edison Police Lt. Joseph Shannon.
The three men told police that they were standing outside in a smoking area when a man approached them, pulled out a handgun and shot at them multiple times, police said. The suspect was described as a black male wearing a white T-shirt, a blue and gray baseball cap and a white shirt that was pulled over part of his face.
Through their investigation, police learned that several hundred people had been at the Holiday Inn to attend a “Caribbean Night” party that ran from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m.
Police recovered a handgun in the parking lot, but it was not clear whether that gun was the one used in the shooting.
When police were first responding to the area, they observed a dark vehicle pull out of the parking lot and travel east on King Georges Post Road at a high rate of speed. Police attempted but were unable to catch up to the vehicle. A description of the vehicle was broadcasted to surrounding jurisdictions. Middlesex County College police found and stopped the vehicle and contacted the Edison police.
Police said three adult males were in the vehicle, and a handgun was found a handgun in their possession. Each was arrested and charged with the unlawful possession of the handgun, Shannon said.
Police would not immediately release the identifications of the three suspects who were arrested, as they are continuing to investigate if the males were involved in the shooting and if either of the handguns that were found in the parking lot and inside the motor vehicle was used in the shooting.
Shannon said the the three males who were arrested had attended the party at the Holiday Inn.
Shannon also said the Edison Police Department and the Middlesex County Prosecutors Office are investigating to determine if the incident was gang-related.
The shooting on July 11 is the second at the Holiday Inn this year; however, police said they do not believe the two incidents are related. The first shooting occurred around 3 a.m. on Jan. 31. In that incident, police said, a 21-year-old male from State Island, N.Y., was with several of his friends and was leaving the hotel sports bar on Woodbridge Avenue when a bullet grazed his head. The victim’s friends told police that they heard gunshots and then realized that their friend was bleeding.
The group was taking the injured man to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital when they flagged down a fire truck that was on its way to an unrelated incident. The victim was taken to the hospital and was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
Police said they do not believe the patrons had been involved in any fights inside or outside the bar.
The investigation into both incidents is ongoing.
Police asked that anyone with information about the July 11 incident call Detective Jeff Tierney at 732-248-7526 and for anyone with information about the Jan. 31 incident to call detectives Mike Michalski or Al Sciarrillo at 732-248-7561.
