Police: Drunken driver fled cop, caused accident
MONROE — A Colts Neck man has been charged with drunken driving and aggravated assault after he allegedly eluded police and caused a three-car accident on Sunday.
The suspect, Eliezer Nonis, 36, was hospitalized with serious injuries following the accident, police said.
Nonis was driving south on Spotswood Englishtown Road in a 2001 Honda Accord shortly after 11 p.m. when a police officer observed him speeding and conducted a motor vehicle stop, according to Monroe police. As the officer approached his vehicle, Nonis allegedly drove off and commenced speeding south on the same road.
Police briefly pursued Nonis’ vehicle but terminated the chase due to the unsafe speed involved and the distance of the suspect’s vehicle from the pursuing officer.
Nonis’ vehicle then struck the rear of another southbound vehicle, a 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse being driven by Rosanna E. Volis, 21, of Manalapan, according to police. The collision occurred just south of Matchaponix Avenue. Nonis’ vehicle then sideswiped a third car, a 2011 Hyundai Sonata being driven by Frank Vellucci, 22, of Monroe, police said. Vellucci had been traveling north on Spotswood Englishtown Road at the time.
Both Nonis and Volis were transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. Police said Nonis received internal injuries including broken bones, while Volis suffered a head injury. The status of their conditions was not immediately available. Vellucci was not injured, police said.
Nonis was charged with DWI, aggravated assault and eluding. Police are continuing an investigation into the events.
