Local businesses team up to help E.B. Rescue Squad

Barry Brill was watching an East Brunswick Township Council meeting one recent evening when an official announced that the township Rescue Squad was in desperate need of funds.

“As a business owner and resident of East Brunswick my whole life, I felt I would really like to help in any way I can,” he said. “People think that the funding for the Rescue Squad predominantly comes from taxpayer money, when that is not the case.”

He decided that he could use his business, Brill’s Karate, on Main Street, Spotswood, to help raise some badly needed funds. He started by offering two weeks of karate lessons for $19.95, with all proceeds going to the Rescue Squad. Then, he sought to spread the word among other local businesses who could also help with the cause.

“I was very happy to see that many businesses were willing to help out,” Brill said. Some of these include McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Dunkin’ Donuts, Subway, 7-Eleven and Wendy’s, which has decided to step it up even further. Wendy’s manager, Frank Rodriguez, came up with what Brill described as “a great idea and very generous offer.”

OnApril 8 from 5 to 8 p.m., the Wendy’s restaurant on Route 18 in East Brunswick will donate 10 percent of all of proceeds to the Rescue Squad.

“We are asking the community to come out and support this fundraiser and get a great meal in the process,” Brill said. He plans to be there personally to support the endeavor.

Brill will also continue to offer the two weeks of karate for $19.95 to benefit the Rescue Squad. Once the two weeks are over, the customer can walk away having donated to the squad, or transition into a student at the school, Brill said.

Brill’s has been in business for 14 years, the first 10 of which were in Milltown. It can be reached at 732-251-0090, by email at bbrill3@aol.comor online at www.brillskarate.com.
